Saturday Morning
On Saturday mornings the kids start arriving by 7:00 a.m. Most of them have walked twenty minutes up and down steep inclines that cross rocky hills and cut between tiny homes.
They are coming to the Royaume Des Enfants classes and programs – they are the Kingdom Kids of Haiti.
Big brothers and sisters hold the hands of younger siblings. Teen volunteers move around with last minute preparations. Director Fanes Priva directs children and helpers like a conductor leading a symphony.
Two are sent to buy extra plates for the mid-day meal. A teen cleans the blackboards and makes sure chalk and teachers’ supplies are ready. A radiant twenty-something woman, one of the many volunteer teachers, sits with a group of young girls who huddle up close to her, listening compassionately to a girl who relates a family problem.
The Kingdom Kids of Haiti meet in temporary facilities, a school on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince. Soon 100 kids are there, ready to learn, to laugh, to pray and to play.
